Australian Submarine Corporation (ASC)

With more than 2,500 employees across three facilities, ASC has evolved into Australia’s largest specialised defence shipbuilding organisation. Simple was engaged to modernise and refresh ASC's website presence to reflect their status as a leader in the industry. In addition to a complete redesign, the project afforded ASC's communications team the opportunity to ensure that the website was effectively meeting their objectives: namely, to attract new recruits, to ensure that existing staff are aware of company-related news, and to inform the general public of the company's ethos and projects.

Project Overview

As a primary communication tool for the organisation, the news section is featured prevalently throughout the website. News articles can be categorised as pertaining to the core sections of the website — Submarines, Shipbuilding, Facilities, etc. — and are then featured on the corresponding internal pages, promoting relevant content to website users and encouraging further engagement.

Social media is also prominently featured across the website; the latest posts from ASC's Facebook page are automatically retrieved and displayed at the bottom of each page. This integration allows ASC's communications team to celebrate milestones and recognition at awards across their digital platforms.

In developing the website, we followed best-practice responsive design principles in order to provide a consistent and user-friendly experience across mobile, tablet and desktop devices.

In delivering the project, we worked with ASC's communications team to ensure that the website followed the organisation’s established brand identity documentation. The resulting design — from the use of the logo, to the colour palette, to the typography — was crafted to match or complement ASC's existing brand collateral. A design element unique to the website is the depth gauge, which follows the user as they scroll, encouraging them to "dive deeper".

The website makes use of ASC's high-impact photography of 150 metre-long destroyers; 3,000 tonne submarines; their state-of-the-art facilities; and the thousands of people that make up their workforce. We worked closely with ASC's internal marketing team to select a library of imagery that showcases the scale and sophistication of the organisation.

One of the project's key goals was capturing applications for advertised positions, as well as for ASC's various programs and apprenticeships. To achieve this, the careers section is closely integrated with a third-party careers portal. The website also makes use of a custom-designed form to collection registrations of interest from potential suppliers, partners and providers.
