We were engaged by LA-based, certified gold pop artist, Allday, to art direct and design his third studio album, "Starry Night Over the Phone." The album title plays on Vincent Van Gogh’s oil painting "Starry Night Over the Rhône," which features the reflective yellow lights from the stars bleeding into the European riverbank. The artwork interpolates that dramatic imagery from the quay with a blurry image of fireworks going off in a quaint neighbourhood, spurting red and yellow sparks that bleed into the night sky.
Billboard Magazine, the world’s most influential music media brand, recognised the album artwork as part of their ‘Year in Music 2019’ wrap up, placing the cover at number 16 of ‘The Best Album Covers of 2019’ between some of the world’s biggest music stars — Billie Eilish, Lizzo, Missy Elliott, Taylor Swift and more.
We were engaged to create a visual style with photography and art direction for Allday's album era. Following the nature of the cover photograph we selected, we created a visual style that would last for the entire album campaign, including tour, press, spotify, apple music, social media platforms, as well as imagery to further the Starry Night campaign for external media and relevant platforms. We shot all images as if the fireworks were key lighting the scenes.
Our cover photograph was taken by Lauren Tepfer in New Jersey. All footage was provided by OneTwo Records. Tour visualiser by Rachael Johnston.
